Reading has more than one claim to fame. The Pennsylvania Dutch Country city
is the home of Reading Railroad, immortalized on the Monopoly gameboard, as
well as the first Civil War regiment, volunteer band and women's society. The
idea to cultivate outlet shopping as a tourist industry was also developed in
Reading, spawning its designation as the Original Outlet Capital of the World.
Each year Reading draws thousands of visitors eager to shop six factory outlet
complexes that sell everything from designer clothing to baked goods to fine
jewelry. The centerpiece of the city's original layout, Penn Square remains
the nexus of Reading, offering a number of shops and boutiques housed in historic
buildings, as well as community activities that take place on the landscaped
pedestrian mall. Several historic attractions reveal the area's fascinating
past, including the Berks County Heritage Center.
